Sarah
Bernhardt was a French actress of the stage and early film
during the late 1800s. Born in 1844 to a courtesan, she
became the most acclaimed actress of her generation. In
1894, Alphonse Mucha, one of the pioneers of the Art Nouveau
movement, was asked to produce a promotional poster for
Bernhardt's latest production, Gismonda, playing at
the Renaissance Theatre in Paris. The result of this
collaboration catapulted Mucha into the limelight in
international art scene almost overnight. The partnership
with Bernhardt would last for a total of six years, and
would result in Mucha rendering Bernhardt on dozens of
posters, prints, paintings, and postcards.
“Sarah” is
a lariat-style necklace inspired by a glass vessel found at
the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. I love
lariats, as they are versatile in style, elegant, feminine
and yet sassy. In this workshop, you will learn to create
seed bead components with circular brick stitch, circular
peyote and a variation of spiral rope chain. |
